How To Take Digital Black and White Photos

If you want to take black and white photos, you should check your camera's features.  Your camera may be able to do this natively.

If not, it's not a big deal.  You can always edit the photos later to get the effect you want.  Just load up your graphics program, and convert your color image to a black and white one.

There are usually different ways to do this.  The standard way is to simply convert your image to grayscale.

With the GIMP, a free, open source program, you simply right click on your image and go to Image-->Mode-->Grayscale.  You now have a black and white image you can edit to your heart's content.

As I've already said, there are other ways.  Read through this tutorial -- http://www.gimpguru.org/Tutorials/Color2BW/ -- to find out more.

If you're looking for hardcore information, visit this “collection point” for black and white digital photography information on the Web: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/digital_black_white.html.

This great site covers taking digital photographs, converting them to black and white images, and then printing them so they look really good.  Printing them isn't as easy as you'd think, so you'll want to read through this site.

The only problem is that you might have to invest in a new printer.  Just because your printer prints great color photos, doesn't mean that it will do a great job printing black and white ones.  Something to experiment with.
